Vinafood 2 will supply the first 250,000 tons of rice to Bangladesh

After the June 14 meeting, Bangladesh Food Minister Mostafizur Rahman announced details of plans to import 250,000 tonnes of rice from Vietnam.

Specifically, Bangladesh will buy 50,000 tonnes of rice at $ 470 / tonne and 200,000 tonne of white rice at $ 430 / tonne from Vietnam. Accordingly, the total value of this deal is nearly $ 101 million, Rahman said.

The price is $ 50-90 / tonne higher than last month, and it is also higher than the price that the Bangladeshi government offers at international auctions (white rice is $ 406.48 / tonne and rice $ 427.85 per ton).

The contractor is Vinafood 2. In which 60% of the rice will be imported through Chittagong port and the remaining 40% will go through Mongla port.

According to data released by the Bangladeshi Food Ministry, the national rice stockpiles fell to 305,000 tonnes as of April 27, down nearly 60 percent from the same period last year. By June 11, the figure dropped to 193,000 tonnes, the lowest level in five years.

The government is expected to buy 1.5 million tonnes of rice this year from March to May. Because, the rain shower left early in April has caused great damage to the rice growing areas in Bangladesh. It is estimated that Bangladesh’s Boro crop this year will reach only about 600,000 tons of rice.
